Having for the past 11 years worked with small businesses and small business owners in assisting with their telecommunications, we have noticed there is a paradox that exists particularly with small business owners, which we still cannot fathom. That paradox is how absolutely essential their business phone system is to their business’s operations, the loss of income that business would suffer if their phone system were to fail, yet the small business owner’s refusal to spend money on a quality phone system. For some unknown reason a mentality exists amongst small business owners that they must reduce their spending on their fixed phones and phone systems down to an absolute minimum, no matter how cheap and nasty the product or service is going to be.
For a majority it certainly isn’t due to a lack of funds. That very same director will have just slapped down $1250 for a new Iphone 6 PLUS – the 128GB version mind you – and all they really do is make and take calls and the odd email. And next to that they have their $1000 Ipad Air 2, only so that they can check the very same emails on the Ipad Air 2 that they can check on their new Iphone 6 PLUS. And don’t forget the all important in-car kit for their BMW M5. Yet if you were to suggest that they upgrade their 15 year old phone system, on which half of the phones have a crackle in them. Or maybe suggest they should invest in a business grade data connection so that their staff don’t have to sit and wait 5 minutes while their computer downloads an email (every time), they look at you as though you are mad! Why?! The simple reason is that they don’t think phone systems are sexy. Phone systems don’t give you prestige. They don’t wow your friends in the same way their friends are wowed when you show them a photo that they took with the Iphone’s new 8 billion megapixel camera (really, 8 megapixel on a small screen – who needs that?! I think people just like saying “megapixel”). Phone systems don’t make you look important when you are waiting at the airport and you pull out your Ipad – just because you’re bored – but everyone thinks you must be doing something important!
By this stage of the blog I know some people will be reading this and are either nodding as they too are as puzzled as I on this same paradox, and others are reading and thinking to themselves “hey that’s me”. To people in the former mentioned group – I share your pain. To those in the latter, I am here to assure you I too have a new Iphone 6, and an Ipad, (still working on that BMW M5 however), and yes, I think they are sexy too! I understand the appeal
