Product Q&A

What phone system does it work with?

A SIP-based conference phone (the OmniTouch 4135 IP). It registers to a company SIP switch or PBX, or to a public IP telephony service provider, and stores settings for two accounts. It connects natively to the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX communication server and will also register to other SIP platforms, including CloudPhone (Bicom), 3CX and Grandstream UCM. Not a Microsoft Teams device. This is a mature product — the documentation supplied with it dates from the R&TTE era, so platform compatibility and firmware support are worth establishing before it goes into a new estate.

Ethernet to the SIP platform, powered by IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (Class 3) over the same cable, configured through the phone’s built-in web server from a PC on the same network. Where a room has no PoE, an AC/DC power supply (item 3GV28133AA, 100–240V AC to 13.5V DC) is an optional accessory and must be ordered separately — it is not standard equipment, so a PoE-less room needs it on the quote. Optional expansion microphones connect by cable, with two microphone ports on the unit and the microphones supplied as a pair (item 3GV28134AA). An auxiliary port supports a wireless headset, or a PA system with an optional PA interface box — note that selecting PA mode turns off the internal microphone and speakers.

OmniSound 2.0 audio using an omnidirectional microphone and three speakers, with noise suppression, an equaliser, and 7 kHz wideband voice on VoIP calls. Published speaker frequency band 200–7000 Hz at 90 dB SPL at 0.5 m, with a three-setting equaliser. Base reception area up to 30 square metres for more than ten people. 240 mm diameter, 77 mm high, 1 kg, black. Illuminated 128×64 graphic LCD. Alphanumeric keypad with on, off, mute, hold and volume keys. Four phone lines, supporting a conference of up to five people including the room, with individual line control to split, rejoin or cut parties mid-call. Call recording to SD card (supported up to 2 GB, saved as .wav, with an audible beep every 20 seconds that can be disabled); internal phonebook holding up to 1,000 contacts and 20 conference groups in each of four password-protected user profiles, with optional external LDAP phonebook; conference guide for pre-programmed group calls. Transport over UDP, TCP, TLS and SIPS with SRTP media encryption, and an on-screen padlock showing whether a given call is secured. NAT traversal via STUN, ICE and TURN. Kensington security slot. Expansion microphones extend coverage from about 30 square metres to about 70 square metres.

Medium meeting rooms on Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX sites, where matching the endpoint to the platform simplifies provisioning and support. The optional LDAP phonebook makes it useful in an organisation with a large central directory. For a new fit-out on any other platform, compare against the Yealink CP925 and CP965 on price, supportability and current firmware.

Conference unit, network cable and documentation. The AC/DC power supply and expansion microphones are optional accessories ordered separately. The manufacturer’s documentation states a two-year guarantee. Where an AC/DC power supply is supplied, it ships with an AU plug and carries the RCM mark; the unit is specified as 100–240V AC. Emergency calling: this device depends on power and an internet connection. If either fails, it cannot make calls, including calls to 000, and it does not pass a fixed street address to emergency services the way a copper line does. Keep an alternative means of calling 000 in the room.

Against the Yealink CP925: the CP925 is a current-generation phone with a 4-inch colour touchscreen, Bluetooth and USB for connecting a laptop or mobile, built-in Wi-Fi, and an actively maintained firmware line with TLS 1.3. The 4135 supports TLS, SIPS and SRTP of its own era, so the gap is the currency of the platform rather than the absence of encryption. The 4135 is the right answer almost only where the site is on OmniPCX and wants the matching endpoint.
