Product Q&A

What phone system does it work with?

The B159 is the flexible-connection model in the Avaya B100 range: it switches and combines line types using a line mode selector, covering an analogue line, a connected mobile phone, and a PC over USB. The B159 is not a SIP endpoint and does not register to a PBX or cloud platform. VoIP calls are made by running a softphone on a PC connected over USB 2.0, with the B159 acting as that PC’s microphone and speaker. If the room needs a phone that registers to a SIP service in its own right, the B179 is the more suitable model. Avaya lists platform support for IP Office R7.0 and above, Communication Manager R5.0 and above, Communication Server 1000 R6.0 and above, and Avaya Aura R6.0 and above. Like the rest of the B100 range, it is Konftel-manufactured and legacy.

Multiple connection options via the line mode selector: an analogue line over RJ11 to a public analogue network or analogue PBX, a mobile or DECT phone via the 6/6 DEC port, and a PC over USB 2.0 — and the modes can be combined, so a mobile participant can be bridged into an analogue call. Headset connection supported via a single auxiliary port, which serves either a wireless headset or a PA system. Mains powered only from an external AC adapter rated 100–240V AC to 14V DC; this model does not support PoE. Optional B100 expansion microphones extend coverage. Note that the mobile phone cables are an optional accessory rather than a standard inclusion, as are the dual analogue line and power extension cable, the video system connection cable and the PA interface box.

OmniSound full-duplex audio with 360-degree omnidirectional pickup and background noise suppression. Positioned by Avaya for large conference rooms and boardrooms with groups over ten people. Call recording to SD card and USB disk; phonebook and conference guide; headset support; smartphone or tablet connection; optional B100 expansion microphones.

Rooms where the connection type is uncertain or changing — a site part-way through an NBN migration, a boardroom that needs to dial out over a mobile when the fixed line is down, or a room used by visiting teams who bring their own mobile. The line mode selector is the whole reason to choose it over a B149 or B179.

Conference unit, power cable and AC adapter. Line cords, mobile phone cables, expansion microphones, the PA interface box, the security lock and cable and the wall-mounting bracket are optional accessories sold separately. Any mains adapter supplied ships with an AU plug and carries the RCM mark; Avaya specifies the transformer as a 100–240V AC unit. Emergency calling: this phone has no battery and does not support Power over Ethernet, so it cannot make any call — including a call to 000 — during a mains power failure. Emergency call handling otherwise depends on the connection in use: a call placed over an analogue line follows that line’s arrangements, while calls made through a connected mobile or through softphone software on a PC follow the arrangements of that service, which may not pass a fixed street address to emergency services. Keep an alternative means of calling 000 in the room.

Against the B149 and B179: the B149 is analogue only, the B179 is SIP only, and the B159 sits between them with switchable connections — though its VoIP capability is softphone-over-USB rather than SIP registration, so it is not a substitute for the B179 on an all-IP site. If the site is settled on all-IP, the B179 is simpler and cheaper to deploy; the B159 earns its price only where a second connection type is genuinely needed.
